Following the autumn EPS committee meeting, we are delighted to announce the Committee’s award nominations for approval at the Annual General Meeting in January 2025.

Professor Rick Hanley

It with great sadness that we inform you that Professor John Richard Hanley, known to all as Rick, died on 23rd May following a prolonged illness.

Rick studied Psychology at the University of Dundee, followed by a PGCE at Jordanhill College, Glasgow, and a PhD at Lancaster. He held academic positions at the University of Northumbria and the University of Liverpool before being appointed Professor of Psychology at the University of Essex in 1998. He retired from Essex in 2020.

Rick’s research combined experimental psychology with cognitive neuropsychology. Particular interests were developmental dyslexia and dysgraphia in English and other languages, the tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon, recognising people from faces and voices, and semantic and biographical memory.

Rick was a regular presenter at EPS meetings and Honorary Treasurer from 2006 to 2011.

Rick will be mourned by family, including his two children and four grandchildren, friends and colleagues.

Obituaries

It is with great sadness that we record the following deaths:

Anne Treisman, February 2018. Anne was a recipient of the EPS Frederic Bartlett Prize award in 1987. Her Bartlett lecture can be found here:

Peter Venables, April 2017. Peter was elected and served as Honorary Secretary of the EPS in 1965-1967 and President of the EPS in 1969-1970.

Annette Karmiloff-Smith, December 2016. Annette was a recipient of the EPS Frederic Bartlett Prize award in 2012.
